Fulfilling the Rising Need for Sustainable Fuel

There is currently a rising need for more sustainable fuel solutions. We’ve been seeking those solutions for over thirty years.

All across Canada, our made in house state-of-the-art collection systems have been used to collect used cooking oil and meat by-products for recycling into ingredients for renewable diesel. Our process allows restaurants to easily dispose of their used grease and contribute to sustainable ingredients.

Darling Ingredients’ History WIth Biodiesel

Starting in the 1990s our parent company has been investing in turning waste into biodiesel. However, with recent developments we’ve changed direction and have begun producing large amounts of renewable diesel—a cleaner biofuel produced with waste feedstocks, fats, and used cooking oils.

The Future

The future is bright for Darling Ingredients Canada. Our storied past has equipped us to be the premier leader in innovative solutions for efficient used cooking oil collection and processing.

We are always seeking new opportunities to help build a sustainable world. As we continue to innovate and look to the future, our sights are set for aviation fuel.

We’re laying the groundwork for the production of sustainable aviation fuel. The Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project is expected to be operational in 2025. Thanks to the Diamond Green Diesel’s Port Arthur plant in Texas.

Currently, aviation contributes greatly to climate change. This is not only because of CO2 emissions, but also due to nitrogen oxides (NOx) which create vapor trains and cloud formations.

The future of Darling Ingredients looks bright. After completion of Diamond Green Diesel’s Port Arthur plant, it is expected to be one of the largest SAF manufacturers in the world.

Using Fats and Used Cooking Oil For Low Carbon Renewable Resources

Used cooking oil and fatty animal scraps can be repurposed and rendered into ingredients for producing sustainable products. This is why we’ve invested in becoming the largest, most efficient collector and processor of used cooking oil and animal fats.

There are so many food products that can be used for this process. Collection alone takes a fleet of trucks and a well laid infrastructure. Darling Ingredients has a streamlined process that lets restaurants plug into the process easily.

Recycling used cooking oil and meat by-products to produce renewable diesel is a large undertaking, but thanks to our joint venture with Diamond Green Diesel, we can do our part in creating a sustainable future.

Effects of These Efforts

DGD creates ~1.2 billion gallons of renewable diesel yearly. Our recently finished plant has allowed us to increase our recycling efforts, and we’re always looking for ways to expand.

These efforts have made a significant positive impact on the climate. In fact, in 2021 our customer’s efforts were equivalent to removing ~604,904 cars from the road.

Joining our effort is not just helpful for your restaurant, it’s good for your world. Stop worrying about disposing of your used cooking oil and start helping the world.

Know How Your Waste is Being Used

We’re able to closely track the impact our customers have on the environment thanks to our vertically integrated system. Once the used cooking oil is picked up it will be taken to one of our facilities then transported to one of our partner facilities. From there it will be used to create renewable diesel.

Darling Ingredients has been improving and innovating on their process for years. As one of the world leaders in the production of renewable diesel, we can confidently say your waste will be used for good. Our customers can know for certain that their food waste will be used in one of our facilities to create renewable resources.

How is Biodiesel Different From Renewable Diesel?

Renewable diesel is a biofuel that is chemically identical to petroleum diesel. However, it burns cleaner and more completely than both petroleum diesel and biodiesel.

Biodiesel often has cold flow issues and transportation restraints. This isn’t seen in renewable diesel. This makes it easier to transport and allows renewable diesel to enter the existing pipeline for distribution with ease. There’s no extra equipment or precautions when transporting renewable diesel.

Renewable diesel boasts a higher cetane level than traditional diesel. This means engines using renewable diesel are able to operate more effectively. With these considerations it’s easy to conclude that renewable diesel is a superior option then other diesel options.

Become Part of the Solution

When partnering with Darling Ingredients Canada you not only find a partner to manage your used cooking oil, but you’re able to reduce your carbon footprint. Contribute to your own sustainability goals by converting your waste into fuel.

Used cooking oil is not easy to manage. Having the correct container that fits the needs of your restaurant is important and can be a game changer. For Canadian restaurants we offer used cooking oil storage solutions that are made in house.

These solutions are chosen by our staff to fit your restaurant’s space and needs. We’ll even help with the installation process and make sure your staff understands how to use the container. After all that is done, we’ll create a pickup schedule to fit your needs. You wont need to worry about how you’ll get rid of your used cooking oil again.

Canadian supermarkets and industrial kitchens can also play their part by partnering with us for meat by-product collection. Similar to used cooking oil collection, we'll send you the proper equipment and create a schedule that works for your business.
